The problem with new media is contained in a single word: Resiliency. Is the ability to adapt to stress and adversity, and is related with hormones such as Testosterone and Cortisol. People who are in constant connection to technology tend to have extremely low resilience. Why is this? Because New Media is a fast, quickly way to get information: you get anything you want without effort. And if people get used to get everything without effort, they loss their capability to solve problems. Without internet, we are no one. We are so used to new media, to have all the answers in a touch, that when we don't have it we just can't do nothing.
now talking about social interactions, The social contact in new media is much easier. Its casual, and you don't have to be worried about your social posture, your gestures or the tone of your voice: Is direct. but is it good? It is , at log term, not. It doesn't involve Real social interaction, so we don't have to work on out posture, on our tone, the modulation of our voice, we can't study the facial expressions of the other person, so we don't exercise us well in the act of socializing, and we lose the capability of empathy, and social intelligence.
Human behaviour is always the same, it just changes its appearance. People complain: "No one talks fa ce to face, everyone is awkward, and everyone is enclosed in their phones!" You know what? No one talks to strange people, unless is necessary. It has been like that for eons. Before the phones, people used newspaper as a social shield, just as today's phones. And before that, people used books, or they just stared at the windows. It's not fault of the new media that people are socially awkward. That's just human nature.
